The usual star man was on show for Mauricio Pochettino’s men as they strolled to three points to make it six Premier League wins in succession

Tottenham built on their win over Premier League leaders Chelsea as Harry Kane netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 demolition of West Brom.

Ahead of the game against Tony Pulis’ men, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino cautioned his players against dropping off after a major win over a title rival – noting their seven-match winless run in all competitions that came on the back of a rampant victory against Manchester City in October.

That slump began with a 1-1 draw at West Brom, but the same opponents were ill-equipped to offer similar difficulties to a Spurs side whose speed of thought and foot put them a cut above on this occasion.

Kane scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season in the 12th minute and Gareth McAuley diverted a shot from Christian Eriksen beyond his goalkeeper Ben Foster before the half hour in what was a torrid opening half for Albion.

Manchester United beat Hull City 2-0 to take a slender advantage into the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final but Wayne Rooney’s wait to become his club’s outright all-time top scorer goes on.

United probed without reward in the first half, as they were thwarted by a diligent and well-organised Hull, playing for the second time under Jose Mourinho’s compatriot Marco Silva.

Juan Mata went closest during the opening period for the hosts and, as he did in the fourth round against Manchester City, the Spain playmaker brought Old Trafford to its feet with the opening goal after half-time.

Rooney pulled level with Bobby Charlton on 249 United goals during Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup triumph over Reading and fired agonisingly wide five minutes before Mata’s 56th-minute breakthrough.

The England captain was taken off shortly afterwards, and he watched substitute Marouane Fellaini add a late second in the knowledge his next tilt at the record should arrive when United host bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

Playing behind an injury ravaged Hull side, visiting goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic plunged to his right to make a superb save after Mata swept left-footed towards the bottom corner in the second minute.

Andrew Robertson got there first as Marcus Rashford dragged a shot across the Hull box and Rooney lurked, sniffing the landmark.

Hull were forced into an early change as Markus Henriksen suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder following a challenge with Paul Pogba to further compound their fitness woes.

Before replacement Abel Hernandez was ready to take to the field United should have taken a 19th-minute lead – Henrikh Mkhitaryan sidefooting wide from 10 yards, having been picked out by Juan Mata.

Arsene Wenger’s side fell behind at Deepdale to a Callum Robinson strike, but hit back through Aaron Ramsey and their French striker

Arsenal remain in the hunt for a 13th FA Cup triumph after hitting back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 third round win at Preston North End.

The Gunners fell behind at Deepdale inside seven minutes, with the ball breaking kindly for Callum Robinson to slide under David Ospina.

Arsene Wenger’s side were flat throughout the first half, but came roaring out of the traps at the start of the second.

Inside the opening minute, Aaron Ramsey collected possession on the edge of the box and rifled home his first goal of the season.

A replay was on the cards until two minutes from time when Olivier Giroud helped to edge the Premier League title hopefuls through a tricky contest.

Antonio Conte named a strong side to face the League One side and his players brushed aside their visitors at Stamford Bridge, with the Spaniard netting twice

A double from Pedro secured Chelsea’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup as Antonio Conte’s men beat Peterborough 4-1 on Sunday.

The Spaniard opened the scoring with a powerful strike in the 15th minute, and closed the scoring with a curled effort past Posh keeper Luke McGee late in the game.

Stand-in striker Michy Batshuayi and Willian were also on the scoresheet, while Tom Nicholls had given the visitors late hope after 70 minutes, shortly after John Terry received a red card for hauling down Lee Angol as the last man.

The Frenchman scored an incredible effort to put the hosts into the lead and Alex Iwobi made the points safe against Sam Allardyce’s toothless Eagles

Olivier Giroud began 2017 with a bona fide goal-of-the-year candidate, helping Arsenal see off Crystal Palace 2-0 to go third in the Premier League.

Giroud lit up the 200th game at Emirates Stadium, opening the scoring with a scorpion kick that echoed Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s effort for Manchester United against Sunderland – though the Frenchman’s ability to stay onside surely trumps the Armenian’s effort.

Spectacular in isolation, the goal also helped Giroud continue on a redemptive run of form that has seen him score in his past two games – his only league starts of the campaign.

As ridiculous as Giroud’s effort was, Arsenal’s second goal through Alex Iwobi could also be branded as such – though at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Arsene Wenger’s side have responded to defeats at Everton and Manchester City with successive victories to nil and they head a tightly packed clutch of clubs trailing second-placed Liverpool in the race to cling onto Chelsea’s coattails.

Palace, meanwhile, remain two points above the drop zone in 17th and Sam Allardyce may fancy a dip into the January sales if he is to steer the Eagles away from danger, as he did with Sunderland last term.

Allardyce remains winless against Wenger as a manager at the Emirates after Sunday’s result, with Arsenal suitably dominant from the off, and though Giroud somehow missed the ball completely from Nacho Monreal’s early cut-back, he opened the scoring in utterly stupendous fashion.

The Blues were looking to set a new top-flight record of 14 successive league wins in one season but they were denied by Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who have moved up to third following their victory.

Alli, who netted two strikes apiece against Southampton and Watford in Spurs’ previous two league outings, continued his rich vein of goalscoring form with a header in added time at the end of the first half.

And the England international soon added his second as he ghosted into the Chelsea box to head past Thibaut Courtois after 54 minutes.

Goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw Jose Mourinho’s men continue their unbeaten run and move level on points with fifth-place Tottenham

Manchester United secured their sixth Premier League win in a row on Monday evening, beating West Ham 2-0 at the London Stadium.

Sofiane Feghouli was sent off for the home side after just 15 minutes in what was the quickest dismissal in the English top flight this season.

And though the Red Devils were unable to take advantage in the first half, substitute Juan Mata put Jose Mourinho’s men ahead soon after, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic concluded the scoring after 77 minutes.

Real Madrid celebrated the first anniversary of Zinedine Zidane’s appointment in style, as James Rodriguez netted twice in a 3-0 Copa del Rey dismantling of Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Zidane has enjoyed a wonderful 12 months in charge of the European champions and his impact showed no sign of subsiding on Wednesday, with Sevilla on the end of a battering in what was predicted to be a tough Copa last-16 first leg for injury-ravaged Madrid.

The rested Cristiano Ronaldo along with the injured Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos were just three of those missing, but their absence was not felt as Madrid ran Sevilla ragged right from the beginning – James breaking the deadlock early on with a fine goal which encapsulated the hosts’ quick start.

The match settled down but Zidane’s men remained in complete control and added a second through Raphael Varane, before James’ doubled his tally by converting a dubious penalty.

Madrid appeared to ease off slightly in the second half, though Sevilla looked no more threatening as the home side kept things tight and disciplined at the back.

In the end, Madrid had no difficulty cruising to victory and taking their unbeaten run to 38 matches in all competitions, but Sevilla will not have to wait long for revenge as the two sides go head-to-head in the second leg and in La Liga over the next 11 days.

Sevilla looked to be in for a gruelling encounter right from the start and Madrid’s intense pressing was crucial to their early goal.

Gabriel Mercado sold Steven N’Zonzi short and Casemiro was on him in a flash, prodding the ball into space for James to pounce before bending a crisp finish into the bottom-left corner from 20 yards.

Sadio Mane’s injury-time goal secured a dramatic Liverpool victory over Everton in a lacklustre Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge’s 94th-minute shot came back off the post but Mane tapped in the rebound.

Everton’s Ross Barkley had been fortunate to stay on the pitch after a late challenge that caught Jordan Henderson on the ankle.

The Reds move up to second in the Premier League table, while Everton remain ninth.

Theo Walcott gave the visitors an early lead, but Pep Guardiola’s men fought back in the second half to leapfrog them and Liverpool into second place in the table

Manchester City were able to recover from an early goal to beat Arsenal 2-1 in Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Theo Walcott opened the scoring just five minutes into the game, taking a through ball from Alexis Sanchez on and beating Claudio Bravo.

City were able to pull level early in the second half, though, as Leroy Sane beat Petr Cech after a ball over the top from David Silva.

Raheem Sterling gave City the lead in the 74th minute when he took down a pass from Kevin De Bruyne and cut inside before burying it past Cech.

The win puts City second in the league ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool, who can take the spot back if they beat Everton on Monday.

Argentine defender Zabaleta opened the scoring on 33 minutes with his first goal in two years before Silva made certain of the points four minutes from time after being teed up by Raheem Sterling.

Watford produced a lacklustre display but will rue a late miss from Odion Ighalo, a rare opportunity that could have changed the match when the deficit was just one.

City’s first win in three keeps them in fourth place and within seven points of leaders Chelsea ahead of Sunday’s crunch clash at home to title rivals Arsenal.

Watford drop down to 11th in the table and have now lost four of their last six top-flight matches.

Heurelho Gomes made an early save from De Bruyne following good link-up play with Sterling, while the goalkeeper also kept out Nolito’s effort after the resulting corner fell into his path.

Nolito tested Gomes again from a tight angle as City dominated possession and probed for a breakthrough.

Full-time at Selhurst Park. United make it two wins on the bounce in the Premier League, and in dramatic fashion as Zlatan Ibrahimovic nets late on to secure the 2-1 away victory.
